After the footings and any block walls have cured, coarse rock or gravel is used as an underlayment. |
Our foundation contractor then put down a layer of sand to fill in between the coarse rock and create a nice solid surface for the concrete to be poured onto. |
Steel Reinforcement (rebar) was then fastened down. There are two major methods of reinforcement for residential construction: rebar is normally 3/8" in diameter, and reinforcing wire mesh (generally a 6" grid). Be sure to check with your local building department to see what is required in your area.

The last step of a slab foundation is pouring and smoothing the concrete.
Rainy, cold, and hot weather can all have adverse effects on your concrete. Try to schedule your concrete pour when you will have a period of dry, moderate weather.
To protect your new concrete in cold weather, cover it with insulation, using batts, blankets, or straw.

The foundation is now fully cured. Our electrician put in the electric panel so that the electric company could hook up temporary service.
