Driveway Preparation for our new Kit Home
When you are purchasing the land to build your kit home, it's very important to read and understand your preliminary title report and to review all documents referenced in it. While in escrow on our land, we discovered that the primary driveway, which connects to a "prestigious" road in Lewiston, was put in illegally.
There is a seasonal creek on the downhill side of the driveway and a Notice of Environmental Constraint was recorded against the property. Basically it read that no dirt movement or building was to be performed in that area. Because the damage had already been done (and not by us!) we were able to negotiate with the Department of Transportation, Planning Dept. and County Counsel to perform work to mitigate erosion problems and were allowed to keep the driveway.

Loren's going to write a description of the work done for the driveway, but in the meantime, here are a few pictures. On the left side of the first picture you can see the bank that he cut back to the required angle. After the work was completed we put seed and straw on the bank for erosion control.

This is the top culvert Loren installed. The department of transportation only required one culvert, but to be safe we installed two.

We laid fractured rock in the ditch by the driveway to facilitate drainage. Again, we were required to put the rock in for the first 100 feet, but we went about 200 feet to prevent a lot of maintenance work. |
